Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station
During this Event, the Group sampled the Leigh Guided Busway: Greater Manchester’s newest means of transport. We met at at 10.20 a.m at Piccadilly Gardens bus station by stand S (outside Wetherspoons), located to the north of the Piccadilly Gardens tram stop, and travelled on the Vantage bus, Route V1, departing at 10.34 a.m., to Newearth Road at Ellenbrook, arriving at 11.09 a.m. This is where the Guided Busway segment of the V1 bus route begins. From here a footpath runs alongside the Busway route and we walked along it to Leigh (5 miles approx.). During the walk it was possible to view the Busway and the buses in operation (8 buses an hour in each direction). There was a break for lunch at Tyldesley, with most enjoying The Union Arms in Castle Street, before the walk was continued as far as Leigh town centre. The return journey from Leigh was by bus along the Busway itself.
Notes for walkers along with copies of the 1920s OS were provided: use this link Leigh Guided Busway Walk Notes to access a copy.
