Liverpool South Railway Station
A walk, led by Gerald Leach and Robin Shinkfield, along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from Old Roan, Aintree to Lydiate (distance 6 miles).
Meet in the concourse of Liverpool South Parkway Station at 10.20 a.m. following arrival of the 09.37 a.m. departure (East Midlands Trains) from Manchester Piccadilly (dep. Stockport at 9.24) and Warrington Central at 09.58). Transferring to Merseyrail the group will then travel to Sandhills and change there on to an Ormskirk train, alighting at Old Roan Station where the walk will commence at 11.00 a.m. approx. Ticketing suggestion is to book a return ticket to Maghull.
The lunch break will be at Maghull, where there is opportunity to eat at a pub or cafe. To get to the lunch locations, we leave the canal at Drapers Bridge (a former swing bridge which are common in the area) and pass a former home of Frank Hornby – note the blue plaque. (Note: the Wetherspoons pub building has no connection, other than its name, with the inventor of toys for boys – who was a Methodist.)
There are several opportunities for an early escape along the route. Return from Lydiate will be by bus to Maghull or Old Roan and then via Merseyrail service back to Liverpool Central station, from here a short walk to Liverpool Lime Street to board trains for onward journeys to Manchester and other destinations.
