2017 Clinker Memorial Lecture

William Fairbairn: the experimental engineer – a study in mid-nineteenth century engineering

The 2017 Clinker Memorial Lecture was given at the Mechanics Conference Centre, 103 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD on Saturday 14th October 2017 commencing at 2.00pm.

The lecture, was given by Richard Byrom, and titled “William Fairbairn: the experimental engineer – a study in mid-nineteenth century engineering”.

The Mechanics Conference Centre is in the (Grade II*) listed building that  it was built for and housed the former Mechanics Institute of which William  Fairbairn was a founder. It is also where the TUC, CIS and, what became, UMIST  were formed. The interior includes original stained glass and other features (notably ceilings) as well as the boardroom in which the TUC first met.
